Zum neuen Jahr nehmen sich viele Menschen vor, sich gesünder zu ernähren oder mehr Sport zu treiben. Während solche Vorsätze in der Praxis schnell scheitern, gibt es etwas, das leichter umzusetzen ist und die Gesundheit dauerhaft schützt: die Installation von Kohlenmonoxid-(CO-)Meldern. CO ist ein unsichtbares, geruch- und geschmackloses Atemgift, das, wenn es unbemerkt bleibt, lebensgefährliche Folgen haben kann.

Vielfältige Ursachen für Kohlenmonoxid
Kohlenmonoxid wird bei der unvollständigen Verbrennung von Gas, Öl, Holz oder Kohle freigesetzt. Mögliche Quellen sind Heizungsanlagen, Kamine, Öfen, Gasthermen, Durchlauferhitzer oder schlecht belüftete Pelletlager. Verstopfte Abgaswege, technische Defekte oder eine unzureichende Luftzufuhr können dazu führen, dass sich das giftige Gas in Innenräumen ansammelt. CO dringt zudem ungehindert durch Wände und Decken, so dass die Ursache nicht zwingend in der eigenen Wohnung liegen muss. Hinzu kommt, dass erste Symptome wie Kopfschmerzen, Schwindel, Übelkeit oder Müdigkeit häufig nicht als Anzeichen einer Vergiftung gedeutet werden.

CO-Melder sind der einzige wirksame Schutz
„Selbst bei regelmäßiger Wartung von Feuerstätten und Einhaltung aller Sicherheitsvorgaben gibt es keine hundertprozentige Sicherheit“, sagt Anne Wentzel, Vorsitzende der Initiative zur Prävention von Kohlenmonoxid-Vergiftungen und ergänzt: „Da Kohlenmonoxid unsichtbar und geruchlos ist, stellen CO-Melder die einzige Möglichkeit dar, gesundheitsgefährdende Konzentrationen des Atemgifts in der Raumluft zu erkennen.“ Die Geräte schlagen Alarm, bevor kritische Schwellenwerte erreicht werden. So bleibt Nutzern genügend Zeit, um sich in Sicherheit zu bringen und Hilfe zu rufen. Hinweise zur Installation von CO-Meldern
CO-Melder sollten insbesondere in Räumen mit Feuerstätten sowie in Schlaf- und Aufenthaltsräumen installiert werden. Im Unterschied zu Rauchmeldern werden CO-Melder nicht an der Zimmerdecke, sondern an der Wand in Atemhöhe (ca. 1 – 1,5 Meter) angebracht. Zur korrekten Montage wird empfohlen, die Bedienungsanleitung sorgfältig zu lesen oder fachkundigen Rat einzuholen, etwa beim glücksbringenden Schornsteinfeger.

Die Initiative zur Prävention von Kohlenmonoxid-Vergiftungen wurde im Jahr 2018 gegründet. Zu den Mitgliedern gehören der Bundesverband der Ärztlichen Leiter Rettungsdienst (ÄLRD), die Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Notärzte (BAND), der Deutsche Feuerwehrverband (DFV), die Vereinigung zur Förderung des Deutschen Brandschutzes (vfdb), der Bundesverband des Schornsteinfegerhandwerks (ZIV), der BHE Bundesverband Sicherheitstechnik, das Deutsche Pelletinstitut (DEPI), der Deutsche Energieholz- und Pellet-Verband (DEPV) sowie verschiedene Hersteller von Kohlenmonoxid-Meldern.
